International United Nations Peacekeeping Day is tomorrow, Wednesday. A variety of programs have been adopted to mark the day. The program includes a series of activities including paying tribute to the peace keepers who lost their lives and were injured in world peacekeeping. Special leaflets will be published in national daily newspapers highlighting the significance and importance of this day. Special discussion programmes have been organized on public-private television channels and Bangladesh Wireless.
This was reported on Tuesday in a press release from the police headquarters. It said Bangladesh Police is a proud partner of the United Nations peacekeeping operations.
The Bangladesh Police march to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission was initiated in 1989 by the Namibia Mission. Since then, a total of 21,828 peacekeepers including the 1,928 women police in Bangladesh have made unique contributions to world peace by serving with professionalism and reputation in 27 peacekeeping missions in 25 countries. 525 members of the Bangladesh Police will be engaged in peacekeeping operations in Haiti within a short time.
The press release also said that at present, 37 police officers including eight women from Bangladesh Police are engaged in UNPOL and UNJOB. Women members of the police have been participating in UN peacekeeping operations since 2000. 25 members of the police sacrificed their lives and 15 were injured while serving in a UN peacekeeping mission.

They have also played a remarkable role in the war-torn countries of Africa and Europe. The unique role of the police has been widely appreciated in international circles. Bangladesh Police is committed to building world peace by engaging in peacekeeping activities as per the United Nations mandate. Note, International UN Peacekeeper Day is celebrated on 29 May every year. This year the day is celebrated on 10 June as it is a public holiday.
